February 22 Granddad's VisitWell once again I missed Wednesday, but I have a good excuse this time. We had company. Granddad was here for a visit, and we had a great time. Nanny and her daughter and granddaughter were in Mexico for a vacation, so Granddad came to our house while they were away. We went skiing, and he and Mike helped out on Zach's skating trip with his class this past Tuesday. He took the kids on walks, and entertained them with his leeches. Yuck! He is currently trying a leeching method to relieve some joint pain he's been plagued with lately. We really feel so blessed to have extended family so close by.
Zach got to see lots of Granddad even though school was still in. Turns out he has pneumonia again, and he stayed home on Monday. He's still coughing pretty bad, but his energy is better now, and he's back at school. He's such a trooper. Now, I used to be big on keeping sick kids home from school, but no one else seems to, and Zach is always picking stuff up from other sick kids. So why should he miss out on class, when almost everyone in the class is as sick as he is anyway?
Jessica is sick too, but it hasn't hit her lungs as bad as Zach. She is in a very talkative stage. She near talked Granddad's ear off. She also loved the leeches, even sang them a lullabye one night at bedtime. She called them beautiful creatures. They are rather, umm, interesting looking. These are imported leeched, from France I believe, and they have some different colors and stripes and stuff. The kids liked them, but to me they were still just leeches, yuck! I will make a new photo album up top with the weeks photos in it.
We spent sometime at the house this past week too. I have finally hired a contractor. He's willing to train me up to be my own general contractor. So my end of the work has begun. I'm measuring and ordering, and picking out colors and countertops. It's been fun. Looks like we'll be done by the end of May. I'll even post some of the before pictures of the house. We've removed the shed like carport from the side of the house, but I can't find the picture of what it looked like before we removed it, so you only get the "after" picture.
That's about it for now, until the next time,
Krista February 14 Happy Valentines Day/Birthday!It's the red heart and flowers day, and I think my husband bought me a hammer. That's okay though, I need one, besides, I haven't a thing to give to him yet! I think I'll make heart shaped something for dinner, and a special dessert for the whole family, that'll be my Valentine to everyone.
Valentines Day has been a day of mixed emotions for me. I always wanted the cute boy to miraculously notice me, and he never did, but it was more than that. Today is my brother Michael's birthday. He's 40 this year. I've never met him. My Mom was very young, and gave him up for adoption, and we have been searching for him for years. I always wished for an older brother, even before I knew I had one, you know, someone to protect me from the jerks at school and so on. I always feel the loss of something that never was especially hard on this day. I know my Mom does too. So Happy Birthday Michael, you are thought of daily.
On to the kids! Zach got his interim report card, and it looks like he's doing well. The report card has three categories Approaching Expectations, Meeting Expectations, and Exceeding Expectations. He is meeting most of his required Kindergarten expectations, except for Focuses on task, Attentive and participates during lessons, and Printing, these ones he's still in the Approaching Expectations category. But he did get one Exceeding Expectations in math, counting by 10's 5's and 1's! We've been working on the printing at home, and he wrote out all of the kids names on his Valentine cards, as well as signing his own name. As for the attentiveness, and focus, well..... It's been a joke in our family that Zach just lives in his own world, but the teacher said he's much better than he was at the beginning of the year, so I think it's just a matter of time. He is the youngest in his class.
Jessica is doing well, and is already in her Valentine party dress. Treehouse TV doesn't call it Valentines day, they call it "friendship and caring day", which Jess has turned into "friendship and carrot day". I guess I'll make carrots with our supper tonight. She's been sick the past few days, same thing Zach has had with the cough and runny nose, so I think her ears have been a bit blocked, hence the misheard "carrots". She's been quite the little helper out at the house. We tend to go when Zach's in school, and she has been great. She doesn't like it, because it's cold and empty, but she doesn't complain and she even finds things to do on her own while I talk to contractors.
Speaking of contractors..... Wow! We had a really close call, and I think I may have been able to convince Mike about the existance of Divine Intervention. I had been getting quotes from a bunch of guys, and I didn't like any of them for one reason or another, and them I met one that I thought would be good. His quote was a little high, but he seemed to really know what he was talking about. I called his references, they all glowed about him. Even though he'd only been in the Valley for 4 months he'd done a lot of work, and I thought it was an answer to prayer, he was even a Christian. So I signed him on Saturday, but didn't give him any money, and he was to start work on Monday. I went to church on Sunday and was telling a friend about this, and she said something like "his name isn't Richard is it?". It was. We didn't think it could be the same guy she was talking about, but we checked into it. Apparently this same guy had taken he ex daughter-in-law for a ride over in Surrey. He had an affair with her, and did a bunch of shoddy renos, then convinced her he had a counseling background, and they were going to start a counseling service together. She took out a second mortgage on one of her homes, and he took off with $200,000 of her money. I googled his name and there was a rip off report on him, for some other guy that lost $6000 to him. I guess it turns out he has a gambling problem, and that he is also wanted by the Surrey RCMP. I called him 24 hours after I signed the contract and told him that I wasn't going to go through with it. He blustered a bit, but when I said my friends daughter-in-laws name, and counseling service, he shut right up. What are the chances that someone would know him in my small church of 30 people, hundreds of miles away from where the crimes were committed? Divine Intervention, and that day the sermon was on miracles!
That's all for me, until the next time.
Krista February 08 What? It's not Wednesday anymore?Sorry folks, I missed my Wednesday deadline. I don't have any excuses, I just plain forgot.
So Zach is supposed to be at swimming classes this morning now that he's over his pink eye, but no. He stayed home all week last week, no school, no swimming, only to get rid of pink eye and catch a horrible cold! I took him to the doctor on Monday, just to rule out pneumonia, and the doc told me to send him to school anyway. He's coughing pretty bad, so I won't take him swimming, but the classroom is already full of sick kids, so he might as well go. He went on his first field trip on Tues. They walked a couple blocks to the skating arena. I needed to be at the church, so I didn't get any pictures, but they'll be going again next week, so I'll get some then.
Jessica is doing better this week. She definitely didn't like me being gone so much with the play. Now that that's over she seems to have settled down a bit. I'm not saying she was a misery or anything, she just missed me, and there were quite a few "Mommy missed bedtime" tears. Did I mention that she doesn't go to school anymore. I wasn't too keen having her in preschool so young, but she so wanted to go, so we told her she could when she was potty trained. Well she went a few times, and has decided she doesn't want to go back. She said she's shy with her friends there. I think she's more like Mike than I'll ever understand. Zach was so outgoing. He could walk into a room full of strangers and be all "Hey guys! It's ME Zach! Let's play!", but she hides behind my legs. I used to think it was a phase, like she was just playing a game, but I learned yesterday the extent of her fear, and just how real it is. We ran into our realtor coming out of Wal-Mart, and she had her McDonalds ice cream cone in her hand. She was fine as I said a quick hello, but as soon as the realtor said hello to her, she panicked and hid behind me, her prized ice cream completely forgotten as she grabbed for my leg. I ended up with ice cream smashed into my jeans and she didn't even seem to care that she lost most of her cone. Yep, she would rather be a part of the wall than be noticed. It's such a departure from my own personality that I'm not sure how to handle it. I know not to make her feel bad or ashamed of her shyness, but how do I nurture her in making new friendships? It'll be a learning process to be sure.
As for the house, I'm still finding contractors. I'll keep you updated as things happen, but so far nothing has.
The play went well, and I'm very glad it's over. The role I had was double cast, as were three other roles. That meant two casts, and four shows, so two shows each. I was a little miffed to have been given opening night, which was a Thurs, and the Saturday matinee. They had very small audiences, and the rest of the cast didn't feel like giving full energy to these poorly attended shows. But the Friday and Saturday shows were sold out, and the cast was totally pumped. Oh well. I learned a whole lot about theater in the process. I probably won't do anymore plays until the kids are a little older. I also won't accept any other double cast roles I don't think. It was a lot of fun, with beautiful clothes, an amazing set , and a lot of teenagers. I don't know that I would work with a teen cast again either. They were fun, but very cliquey. You can see pictures here http://public.fotki.com/TerryPenney/theatreworks/ the password is kymme . If you have any problems, email me and let me know, I'll see if I can help. There are 5 albums at that link, I'm only in one of them, the second dress rehearsal one. Enjoy.
That's it for now, until the next time.
